Itacate: A Heritage Carried Through the Wilderness

Itacate: A Heritage Carried Through the Wilderness

Have you ever left a family gathering with a bundle of food wrapped lovingly just for you? That’s Itacate—but it’s so much more than just a word. Although many may assume it’s Spanish, Itacate comes from Nahuatl, a native Aztec language spoken in central Mexico for centuries. Itacate is a term deeply rooted in community and culture. It means the act of carrying food for the journey ahead or a bundle of food to take home after a gathering.

The Nahuatl influence can be seen in everyday Spanish words like "chocolate," "elote," and "molcajete," showing just how intertwined the cultures have become. But Itacate is extra special. It represents nourishment, not just for the body but for the soul, especially for those embarking on a journey.

What does “Itacate” mean?

The word Itacate comes from Itacatl, meaning food that’s carried for sustenance during a trip. For many families, especially in Mexican culture, sending loved ones off with a bundle of food after a gathering is an expression of love, care, and tradition. When you think of Itacate, you imagine a small piece of home, wrapped up to nourish you during your adventure—whether it’s a physical journey, like hiking a mountain, or simply returning to your day-to-day life.

Latinos and the Outdoors: Bridging Culture and Nature

When Martha, our founder, started Itacate Foods, she didn’t just want to create backpacking meals. She wanted to bring the flavors of her culture to the great outdoors. For her, food is a direct connection to heritage, family, and community. Each meal we create is a reflection of that—whether it's our Aventura Arroz con Leche or Sunset Caldo, every dish brings with it memories of shared meals, traditions, and the Latin experience.

The outdoor industry hasn’t always catered to diverse audiences, despite the rich connections many cultures have with nature. As Latinos, we often enjoy the outdoors in groups—be it with friends or family. And just like any good gathering, food is a crucial part of that experience. Food brings comfort and familiarity, even when you’re miles away from home in the wilderness. Martha knew how important it was for those enjoying nature to also have access to meals that felt like home, even in the most remote locations. Our meals are designed for the adventurer who craves something more—a connection to their roots, a flavorful escape from the freeze-dried food most are used to. We’re inherently connected to the land, and at Itacate, we believe that should be celebrated.

Every meal we create is hecho con corazon—made with heart. Whether you're hiking a trail, camping, or embarking on a long backpacking trip, we want you to feel that sense of comfort and belonging when you open an Itacate meal. It’s more than just sustenance; it’s a small piece of home that travels with you.

Nourishment for the Journey Ahead

Itacate isn’t just food. It’s an invitation to experience culture, to connect with heritage, and to celebrate diversity in the outdoors. Whether you're enjoying Sunset Caldo by the campfire after a long day on the trail or treating yourself to Aventura Arroz con Leche for breakfast in the backcountry, you’re taking a journey not only through nature but also through the flavors and traditions that have shaped generations.

At Itacate, we’re proud to be part of your adventure. We’re even prouder to be bringing a taste of home along for the ride. So pack your gear, grab your Itacate meals, and remember—every journey is better when shared.
