Questions, Answered

Is It Vegan?

Yes. It's made with coconut milk, so it's vegan and dairy-free, even though the name says "leche." The strawberries, chia, and cinnamon are plant-based too.

Does It Taste Like Real Arroz con Leche?

It's in the spirit of it, with creamy, cinnamon-sweet rice, but it isn't identical. The coconut milk gives it a slightly different flavor than dairy, and the strawberries are our twist. One reviewer said it reminded them of their grandmother's cooking, and another didn't think it tasted like arroz con leche at all. If you want an exact match to a family recipe, this will be a close cousin.

Is It a Dessert or a Breakfast?

Both. Many people eat it after dinner as a treat, and others have it for breakfast. Reviewers like it for both.

How Do You Make It?

Add 3/4 cup of hot water to the pouch, stir, zip it closed, and let it sit as directed on the package. Stir again and eat straight from the pouch. Reviewers say the package directions are accurate and that hot water works.

Is It Too Sweet?

It's sweet, but reviewers describe it as "not too sweet," with cinnamon and strawberry coming through. If you like things less sweet, it's a good fit. One reviewer found it a bit bland until they added banana.

Is It Filling?

At 450 calories, reviewers call it "delicious and filling." It has 7 grams of protein, so if you want more staying power, stir in nuts, nut butter, or sliced banana.

Is It Gluten-Free?

We don't add any gluten-containing ingredients, but it's made in a facility that also handles products with gluten. Because of that, we can't call it gluten-free. If you have celiac disease or a serious sensitivity, this one may not be right for you.

What Can I Add to It?

Anything you like. Reviewers have added banana, and raisins, nuts, or a spoonful of nut butter would all work. A little extra cinnamon is also good.

I took 5 different brands of food this week long trip to Grand Canyon. Itacate was the agreed upon favorite by all 4 people in our group.

One of the worst things I've eaten

I'd give it zero stars if possible. Doesn't taste like arroz con leche at all. Almost like a sour after taste that doesn't leave. I was so disappointed in the taste. I left the camp hungry.

Delicious and Devoured!

I bought this meal as my first ever backpacking meal and it did not disappoint! As a woman from South Texas it's so incredible seeing Hispanic-inspired food while in the backcountry. The directions on the packaging did not steer me wrong. The rice came out nice and soft and it was perfectly sweet. I also enjoy how they are single serving packs, but still plenty of food. Delicious and filling. Highly recommend!

Los antojitos de infancia

It reminds me of the days when my abuela would be making it, and I couldn't wait to have a taste.

I love the arroz...

I love the arroz con leche! The strawberry and chia seeds are a nice touch! It was perfect for breakfast while backpacking. I recently hosted a group camping trip and got one of these meals for everyone to try!

Delicious addition to your product line

Delicious and would buy again! Satisfying eating as-is, just the right amount of sweetness. Great idea from another reviewer to take along as a convenient travel food that can simply be prepared with hot water and eaten out of the pouch. Nice addition to your line of backpacking meals, looking forward to future options!

Uniquely Delicious, Highly Recommend!

Uniquely delicious! I've been impressed with all of the Iticate meals so far and had to give this new one a try. Threw it in my backpack on a recent plane flight to visit friends. Come in really handy when I got stuck in the airport over night. When I was starving getting on a really early flight this meal was such a delight! Just had to ask the flight attendance for hot water and I had a delicious meal. Its great as is, and could easily be a base for more fruit and toppings. I will definitely be purchasing again and bring with me on future trips!

Who this is for

This is for the backpacker who wants something sweet after dinner, or a breakfast that isn’t oatmeal. If you already love arroz con leche, you’ll recognize the creamy, cinnamon-sweet rice. If you’ve never had it, this is a good place to start. Eat it as dessert or as breakfast. It’s made with coconut milk, strawberries, chia, and cinnamon, and it’s vegan. We left out the raisins on purpose, so if you’re team raisin, this one will taste a little different from the version you know.
